A lot of people have asked for a downgrader for v2.80 that's both safe and simple to use.  Well, the Noobz aim to please - we've merged and ported Dark_AleX's generic downgrader and TA-82 downgrader, to bring you what is probably the best v2.80 downgrader!  :)  

 And as a bonus, we made this possible by porting Dark_AleX's HEN-D release to firmware v2.80, which means that if you don't want to downgrade yet, you now have a good platform for launching kernel-mode homebrew.

Why should you use this downgrader?  Well, the major advantages are:

• safety - this downgrader has plenty of safety checks in place to try to avoid accidental bricks (but read the warning below)
  
• convenience - because this downgrader works with an official firmware EBOOT.PBP file, and includes the TA-082 idstorage changer and HEN files, you don't need any other files (except for a v1.5 update EBOOT) to perform the downgrade.  No more finding a v1.5 owner to get dumpfiles!
• latest TA-082/086 support - the bundled TA-082 registry fixer includes the latest fixes to make sure that USBHost support won't be messed up.

1. Install the HEN files, by following the details in the readme.txt file.
2. Test that HEN is working fine, by running one of the bundled sample applications - e.g. the cube demo.
3. If you have a TA-082 or TA-086 PSP, run the "TA082 IdStorage Changer", via HEN, to patch your registry before downgrading.
4. Get a copy of the v1.5 upgrade EBOOT (e.g. from here) and copy it to the /psp/game/UPDATE/ folder on your memory stick, as UPDATE.PBP.
5. Start the"PSP Update ver X.YZ" program via HEN, and follow the instructions.
6. Congratulations, you now have a v1.5 PSP! :D
   

WARNING - Like any downgrader, there is always a risk of bricking your PSP.  We have done our very best to make this as safe as possible, but by using this program, you accept all responsibility for any problem that may occur.  ALWAYS READ ALL THE INSTRUCTIONS CAREFULLY BEFORE USE.

ALSO NOTE: This has only been tested with the v1.5 EBOOT.  Other EBOOTs may fail, or brick your PSP.

 Full credit is due to Dark_AleX and Mathieulh, who generously provided code and assistance during porting of both HEN and the generic downgrader, and HarleyG, who was instrumental in much of the research that went into that code.

One final word - this shows what is possible when developers ignore artificial boundaries and egos and help each other out.  We hope to continue to work closely with Alex and Mathieulh in the future, to keep the homebrew scene moving forward like an unstoppable juggernaut :D

UPDATE: To answer some FAQs:

• You can use this on any v2.80 PSP.
• If you don't have TA082/TA086, just skip the idstorage step.
  
• For firmwares < v2.80:  for non-TA082/086, I'd recommend using one of the existing downgrader solutions - the generic downgrader for v2.71, for instance.  For TA082/TA086, it's probably most convenient to upgrade to 2.80 and use this one, since it includes the latest idstorage fixes.
• Creating a downgrader for v2.81 or later is not possible until a user-mode exploit is found for one of those firmwares.  Yes, we're looking.  No, they're not easy to find.
• This is not based on Ookm's work in any way - the techniques are entirely different, and work on this downgrader was begun before Ookm released his.  So, although Ookm's downgrader was a fine piece of work, this one does not owe anything to his.
• If you're having trouble, re-read the instructions in the readme files. The instructions in this article are just an overview.  If you're not able to read instructions, you shouldn't be considering downgrading your PSP.
• The idstorage changer and the downgrader both have safety checks, so that if you attempt to run them on an incorrect PSP type (trying to patch a non-TA082/086, or trying to downgrade an unpatched TA082/086) then you will get an appropriate warning.  But it's always better to know what you're doing in the first place - so follow the instructions!
• When you copy the update EBOOT.PBP into PSP/GAME/UPDATE, make sure not to overwrite the EBOOT.PBP file that is already there.  It's probably best/easiest to rename it before the copy.
• You can use the North American v1.5 Update EBOOT on any region PSP.
• If you're having trouble getting HEN to start, try just recopying the HEN files to your memory stick, then doing a complete power off reset, then turn on, go straight to the photo folder, wait for 20 seconds, then open the HEN folder.  This seems to be the most reliable method.  If you have a lot of trouble, try formatting your memory stick first.  Also, an empty 32MB stick seems to be the best starting point.
• There is always a chance of bricking your PSP when upgrading / downgrading.  As far as we know though, this is as safe as we can make it.

I've also d/l'd the HEN-D 2.80 files from numerous sources...even though they appear identical...

Ran the PSPUpdate.X.Y downgrader. Followed the On-Screen instructions. It Rebooted my PSP. A system crash error showed up, my heart sank. Was so p**sed off. Didnt notice that it said "Press O to Restore" Pressed O... When to system information, FIRMWARE 1.50 BABY :-D Thanks, you guys rock, and good luck to everyone else.

Then copy the whole of the contents of the MS_ROOT folder from both of them to your memory stick. If you don't have 5 files (excluding UPDATE.PBP) in PSP/GAME/UPDATE after that, then you've done something wrong.

It took me about 50 tries to get HEN to run. Switch on PSP, go to HEN, crash, switch on PSP, go to HEN, crash, repeat, etc. Eventually it worked, the screen flashed light blue and the PSP rebooted. From then on running the downgrader was quick and easy. Well done noobz.eu for porting this to 2.80!

I downgraded my 2.80 PSP yesterday. Worked without a problem. I started by charging my PSP and then left the charger plugged in during the entire process. I took the small 32MB memory card I got with the PSP, formatted it (just in case), and then copied the required HEN, downgrader and 1.50 FW to it as the instruction says. Took only a few atempts to get HEN going, and then I started the downgrader. No problems. After setting the PSP up again, I upgraded to 3.03 OE-A and then applied the OE-B patch. My PSP was bought at the release day here in Sweden, so it has some old motherboard...

OK got the same problem like many others when trying to execute HEN. It just freeze up on you no matter how many times you try it. The only way that I manage to get it running on 2.80 (TA-082 mobo) is to execute HEN and let it auto shut the PSP. It will auto shut the PSP after a few secs it freeze the console. On it back again and keep repeating the same steps until maybe 3 or 4 tries and BAM! HEN is working. Just remember do not take out your battery or switch off your PSP just let HEN switch it off when it freeze up on you!

I cannot get HEN to start ever. Format, recopy files, erase all files, copy hen files, reset PSP, remove battery. Start with "start" instead of "X". Over and over and over again for hours. Reset all to defaults. No Joy. The most success I have had is a flickering flash indicator then lockup, or I've seen the hen picture enlarged, then the PSP locks up when I go back. Any suggestions at all would be appreciated. I'd love to get this working.

OK, so I got it to work! I'm not sure what I was supposed to see the chicken do or not do, but after one of the "freezes" the screen went pale blue for a second. I thought that sounded familiar and good, so I tried the cube demo and it fired right up. I pressed the home button to exit the cube demo, then went back to the game/memory card window and executed the x.yz update. I held my breath as it erased my flash. (AHHHH!!!!!!!!) Then crossed my fingers as it rewrote it. Slight, bone-chilling, hang at 99%, then boom. "Press X to reset PSP" Now all I need is some emulatorz, a bigger memory stick, and a six-pack. (beer, not abs) Thanks to you NOOBz, I have crossed the boundary between the unenlightened and the lucky. You've earned a fan for life. THANKS!!!
